Emergency Food Supplies on a Budget

I’ve been working on a lens about putting up emergency food supplies on a budget and thought I’d share it with you all. I think I’ve mentioned before that I buy Honeyville  Farms #10 cans from Amazon.com when I have extra grocery money. A few other things I do to make sure I have supplies on hand in case of an emergency are:

  • Using my dehydrator to put up extra tomatoes, apples and a few other foods.
  • Picking up canned goods on sale to stock the pantry.
  • Getting 5 gallon bottles of water from the grocery store to use with a water crock dispenser that doesn’t need any electricity.

How do you put together your emergency food supplies on a budget?

  1. Quick question: How do you store the food that you dehydrate? I’m just now working on my Emerg. Food Pantry. I’ve got about 2 months worth, but working on a year.

It depends on the food a bit. You can store food in airtight jars or vacuum sealed bags in a cool spot that is out of the sun if you are sure it is properly dehydrated or in your freezer if you aren’t. Either way, make sure it isn’t still warm from the dehydrator before you store it and plan to use it within a year. And if it is moldy when you go to use it, toss it.
