Gardening With Kids

I am stuck inside with this rainy weather, so I am writing about the garden instead of actually doing anything garden related. (Well, I am starting sweet peppers a bit late. I’m going to grow them in containers and overwinter them indoors since they may not have quite enough time to mature.) I wanted to start with a plug for gardening with your children. One of my favorite things to do as a child was hanging out in the veggie garden and picking cherry tomatoes right from the bush in the hot summer months and I want my guys to have the same great memories.
In addition, Gardening with kids is a great way to get them involved in growing food that is organic and has a small carbon footprint. It also helps them get interested in eating a variety of veggies they wouldn’t try otherwise. When you nurtured that little squash fro a seedling and saw the squash blossoms bloom and little squash develop on the plant, it just makes sense to give what you made a try.
If you don’t have a garden, there is plenty of time to still plant. I plant about half my garden in late summer for fall harvesting. And don’t let a lack of space stop you! You can grow lettuce in a window box.
