Mountain Dew Glow Stick Experiment

So, we read an article about using Mountain Dew to make a glow stick. We tried two separate times to make it, once with a 2 liter we thought might be a bit flat and once with a can, which was definitely not. It was an epic failure. No light. No glow.

I decided to see what we were doing wrong and discovered that it might just be a big scam. Teachers tried it in their science classes, scout troops tried it, grown men interested in science tried it. They all came to the conclusion that people were using glow sticks in their bottles to make the actual glow. What would motivate people to create an experiment scam like this? People are weird.
