My Self Sustainable Lifestyle Book and Magazine Picks

If you have been Swagbucking away, you probably have a few Amazon gift cards saved up. If so, and you are interested in finding out more about living a more sustainable lifestyle, here are a few of my favorites.

The self sustainable lifestyle book I just ordered from amazon.com

Self Sustainable Lifestyle Magazines

Countryside and Small Stock Journal
Mother Earth News
Grit
Hobby Farm
Hobby Farm Home
Urban Farm – Not seeing this one at Amazon yet. I bought an issue off the shelf at my local feed store.
I have, at one time or another, purchased all of these magazines and enjoy reading the articles. I’d say that if you could only get one, Mother Earth News would be the one that has the most overall bang for the buck and is the one I subscribe to over and over again. Countryside is a little pricier and not as useful for someone living in the city, but is my second pick.

Urban Farm, Hobby Farm and Hobby Farm Home all have pretty pictures and are fun to look at. They have informative articles and are perfect for someone who is dreaming about a life that includes a small farm.

Self Sustainable Lifestyle Books

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Self Sufficient Living – I actually don’t have this one in hand yet, because I just ordered it today. I’ve seen some good reviews and I’m hoping it breaks down stuff I’m not really skilled with, like solar power.

Home Farm – One of two books anyone who has no farm experience and wants to have a little farm or homestead should read. It is kind of an encyclopedia of farm basics. And I just checked Amazon and saw there were only used copies. How could it go out of print? Well, if you can find a used copy cheaper than almost $50, pick it up.

Storey’s Basic Country Skills – The other book someone who has no farm experience should read. I think I could muddle through if I was dropped onto a farm with only this book. It is that useful.

So, when I have more gift cards saved up, what other books or magazines should I check out? Do you have a favorite homesteading, solar living, or self sustainable living book or magazine you think I should take a look at?

Oh, and if you don’t have gift cards or you’re saving them for something else, you can still take a look at these titles by checking with your library. Even if your local branch doesn’t carry them, you may be able to get at least the books through interlibrary loan and you should be able to read articles from the magazines through your library’s article database subscription.
