Plumpton Park Zoo Is a Kid Friendly Maryland Destination

One of our favorite destinations on a nice Spring or Summer day is the Plumpton Park Zoo in Cecil County, Maryland. This little zoo may not be as big or elaborate as the Maryland Zoo at Baltimore or the Washington Zoo, but it is actually more enjoyable for parents with small children to navigate, since there is a lot less walking to do!

The animals don’t have huge habitats to roam in, but they are well cared for and not crammed into tiny spaces, either. The kids like being able to actually see a tiger or giraffe up close instead of across a few acres of grassland and have given them all nicknames. When we’re tired of walking around talking to the animals, (Or the grown ups get tired of pulling a rented wagon around…) we head to the picnic area and the kids eat lunch or play on the equipment there.

giraffeBecause the zoo is on the small side and doesn’t involve packing up a ton of gear for the trip, it is something fun that we can do frequently, like going to the library or the playground.

tigerI bought tickets the first day we went and asked if we could roll the price of the tickets into a yearly membership at the end of our trip if we thought we’d visit a lot. The ticket taker agreed and that is what we did. I prefer to find out if I can do this anytime I visit a place that sells a membership because there’s no sense in buying one if you won’t come back again. On the other hand, I don’t want to buy tickets for half the price of a membership, decide I want to join and then have to pay full price for a membership when what I spent on the tickets could have gone towards the membership.
