A lot of moms struggle with whether to stay home with the kids or to make money to help the family be more financially secure. It is a tough choice and there is no one size fits all answer. Going to work means you very well might miss a special first. You feel guilty and you want to be with your little ones so much that it hurts. On the other hand, staying home, even if your spouse or partner makes a good income, often means that you can’t do the extra little things that working moms can afford.

M. Nota/SXC

One solution is to try working from home to try to make some extra cash. I used to have an entire website dedicated to the topic of working from home and there are a ton of opportunities out there. There are also a ton of scams, so be careful!

Here are five ways to earn extra cash that I am working on when I’m not working on my residual income sites or writing:

I am an independent consultant for Usborne Books & More and have my own online bookshop at growyoungminds.com.

I signed up to sell products through Zazzle using some of the many nature photos I’ve been taking.

I also signed up at freerangestock.com to offer photos. This is an Adsense/ad share program and isn’t looking terribly promising so far, but if you have an Adsense account and have photos languishing away on your hard drive, it is worth a shot. I’m thinking to try something like Shutterstock instead if things don’t improve.

I’m testing out Redgage, which is kind of a paid social networking site. Some people are earning a good amount. I’ve earned less than $5 so far. We’ll see.

I’m going to go back to using the Swagbucks (referral link) search box, which has gotten me several Amazon gift certificates. I stopped because I wasn’t getting the search results I wanted fast enough, but I’m hoping they fixed the little time out glitch it was having. Getting that little bit extra off an Amazon purchase just because I looked up recipes or activities through Swagbucks instead of Google or Bing is really nice.

Over the next six months, I’m going to see which ones are worth the time and energy and which don’t really earn for me. If you’d like to try earning extra money along with me, I’d love to have more people involved in the experiment.

Usborne does require an upfront investment in the kit, but it was completely worth it to me because I love the books and really believe in the company. The ten titles that came with the kit were really nice. If you don’t have any cash to invest in a business, you can still try out the other options.

Are you going to join me in testing a few income opportunities?
